The IMO has been working in the Fiji Islands since 2002. The branch here was established by Allama Pir Hazrat Zainul Aqtab Siddiqi. From its inception, it has established firm links with the Fiji Muslim League (FML) which represents the entirety of the Fijian Muslim population. The IMO has consistently worked in conjunction with the FML to promulgate their shared vision of educating the Muslim community as to their true identity and streamlining their development. Together, they have established numerous mosques and Islamic Centers throughout Fiji. These include mosques in the towns of Suva, Latouka, Ba and the islands of Vitu Levu and Vanua Levu.
The annual national Mawlid celebrations in Fiji are held in high regard by the Fijians to the extent that the government has declared it a national holiday. Numerous functions are held in celebration of the beauty of the Beloved Prophet Peace be upon him. The main Mawlid in Ba is attended by tens of thousands of people including the Prime Minister of Fiji and other government officials.
The grass root links of the FML in Fiji has been transformed in its affiliation with the IMO to become a part of a streamlined, visionary organisation. In addition, links with the IMO has enabled the Fijian Muslim community to benefit from the international perspective, shared global links and wealth of experience which it offers. As a result, the years of IMO’s establishment in the Fiji islands has extended the developmental prospects of the local community.
The Fijians are an incredibly cultured and welcoming people living in an environment that is the image of tranquillity. Although they are not a materially driven society, Fijians revere material status. The IMO can push forward the Fijians towards a more wholesome life balancing materialism and spirituality.
The government of the Fiji Islands faces the challenge of dealing with diverse cultures in a sensitive yet proactive manner. The IMO will strengthen government institutions and assist them in providing for its citizens. It will also be active in enabling a speedier and equitable distribution of material wealth for its people.Copyright © 2008 IMO All right reserved.
